The Harris County Flood Control District Takes Action to Keep Community Informed About Project Brays

Project Brays initiates aggressive public information program
HOUSTON (February 4, 2004) - The Harris County Flood Control District (HCFCD) recently announced its plans and commitment to serve as the community's key information source as significant construction on the Brays Bayou Flood Damage Reduction Project (Project Brays) moves forward. Designed to benefit thousands of residents and businesses by reducing the risk of flooding, Project Brays is one of the largest, most extensive projects ever to be managed by the HCFCD. An aggressive public information program is in place for Project Brays and will assist the citizens of Harris County during the project's implementation over the next several years.

"Any time you have a project of this magnitude, it's important to keep the lines of communication open for area residents and business owners," said Mike Talbott, director of the Harris County Flood Control District. "Public knowledge, public input and public participation are extremely important to the Harris County Flood Control District and the success of our projects."

For the next 10 years, the HCFCD will continue to construct improvement projects along Brays Bayou including approximately 21 miles of channel modifications, 32 bridge modifications/replacements and the completion of four regional stormwater detention basins. These improvements will bring relief to the tens of thousands of residents and businesses along the bayou and lead to a substantial reduction in the risks associated with flooding. In addition, through partnerships with multiple Harris County Commissioner Precincts, the City of Houston and other organizations, Project Brays will also bring much needed open green space and recreational amenities to the communities along Brays Bayou.

Project Brays is one of the HCFCD's largest and most extensive projects ever undertaken and calls for an aggressive public information program in place. Through a wide array of communication outlets the HCFCD will be able to educate the community, keep them regularly informed and encourage public participation and input in various aspects of the project.

"The primary goal of this program is to provide people with the knowledge and tools to understand the project and its benefits, but also to inform them of specific activities happening in their area so they can plan accordingly," said Fred Garcia, director of communications, Harris County Flood Control District.

The HCFCD is taking a proactive role in reaching out to the community through a variety of ways, such as:

The creation of the new Web site, www.projectbrays.org, which includes a project overview, project history, project schedules/status, frequently asked questions, construction advisories and detours, photographs and maps of the project and a learning center
The distribution of periodic e-mail updates on the project, such as benchmarks, new construction and public meetings
The maintenance of a Project Brays hotline at 713-316-4820 for information and inquiries
The creation and distribution of a Project Brays special newspaper insert, newsletter and direct mail pieces
Hosting public meetings and information fairs to inform residents and businesses of upcoming improvements and to address questions and concerns
Providing speakers to community groups and other organizations along the bayou
Working with local media to better inform the community of upcoming construction activities and public events of interest
Through these communication tools, community members can stay informed of progress in their area, knowing that every piece of the overall project completed along Brays Bayou means a reduced level of flood risk for their homes or businesses.
