Construction Underway at the Willow Waterhole Stormwater Detention Basin
May 20, 2004
The Harris County Flood Control District (HCFCD) recently began construction on the highly anticipated Willow Waterhole Greenway Project, a significant component of the $450 million Brays Bayou Flood Damage Reduction Project (Project Brays). The Willow Waterhole Greenway Project is one of many regional stormwater detention basins for Project Brays that will provide flood damage reduction benefits for residents and businesses.

Upon completion, it is anticipated that the Willow Waterhole Greenway Project will: directly reduce the risk of flood damage for approximately 700 structures along Brays Bayou in the most flood-prone portion of the watershed during a 1% (100-year) storm event; and will reduce potential flood damage along Brays Bayou by about $100 million during that same 1% (100-year) storm event, which averaged over time, equals roughly $5.5 million in flood damage reduction each year.

Holds Its Own for Stormwater and Greenspace
The first phase of construction is focusing on the excavation and development of approximately 40 acres of land. Once the flood damage reduction portion of construction is complete, recreational amenities will be added through a $750,000 grant that was awarded by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department to the City of Houston Parks and Recreation Department. The Willow Waterhole Greenway Project will include such features as walking paths, bike trails, a gazebo, a picnic pavilion and miniature lakes.

The Willow Waterhole stormwater detention basin is scheduled for completion in 2011. However, the community will not have to wait until the project is completed to experience a reduced flood risk, because with every shovel of dirt removed, the HCFCD is lessening the risk of flood damage for those homes along the bayou.

Ultimately, the Willow Waterhole stormwater detention basin will hold 600 million gallons of stormwater, equivalent to the size of about 1.25 Astrodomes; and bring about 300 acres of useable green space to the nearby communities.
