Final Phase of Arthur Storey Park Stormwater Detention Basin Has Begun

The Harris County Flood Control District has begun construction on the final phase of the Arthur Storey Park Stormwater Detention Basin, part of the Brays Bayou Flood Damage Reduction Project (Project Brays).
When complete, the stormwater detention basin will be able to store 1.2 billion gallons of stormwater (about 2.5 Reliant Astrodomes of water) that could otherwise flood homes and businesses along Brays Bayou. Construction is expected to be completed the first quarter of 2007. It is currently about 90 percent complete.
The District awarded a $2.8 million contract in March to complete the final phase of excavation of the stormwater detention basin, located at Beltway 8 near Bellaire Boulevard.
Project Brays: The Largest Flood Damage Reduction Project In Harris County
The basin is one component of Project Brays, a massive flood damage reduction project which is expected to remove the 1% (100-year) floodplain from nearly 30,000 residences and businesses along the bayou. When working in conjunction with three other detention basins near Brays Bayou, the result is nearly seven Reliant Astrodomes of stormwater storage.
More Than Just Holding A Lot of Water
The basin has also become an outstanding example of how flood damage reduction projects can double as multi-use sites when other entities (in this case, Harris County Precinct 3) partner with the District to bring recreational features to stormwater detention basin sites. The Arthur Storey Park Stormwater Detention Basin was designed to serve as a park in dry weather, featuring a Tai Chi court, gazebos, a playground, picnic areas, a duck pond and walking trails.
Total estimated cost of the Arthur Storey Park Stormwater Detention Basin is $49 million. Total estimated cost for Project Brays is $450 million.
