Final Phase of Old Westheimer Stormwater Detention Basin to Begin Soon
August 8, 2006
The final phase of construction for the Old Westheimer Stormwater Detention Basin will soon begin. This phase of construction is expected to cost $2.1 million. It will bring the basin from the 80 percent completion mark to 100 percent complete. Construction is expected to conclude in March, 2007.
This stormwater detention basin is located at Old Westheimer Road near Alief-Clodine. It's just one component of the Brays Bayou Flood Damage Reduction Project (Project Brays), which aims to contain the 1% (100-year) floodplain inside the bayou's banks. Overall work on Project Brays, a $450 million project, is estimated to be completed in 2014.
Stormwater Detention Basins Play Vital Role in Flood Damage Reduction
In addition to this basin, the District is currently excavating three other stormwater detention basins in the Brays Bayou watershed as part of Project Brays. When fully functional, all four basins working together will be able to hold the equivalent of seven Reliant Astrodomes of stormwater.
