Local Volunteers Assist with Wildflower Plantings at the Willow Waterhole Stormwater Detention Basin
September 30, 2009
More than 30 Westbury-area residents and members of Cub Scout Pack 99 gathered at the Willow Waterhole Stormwater Detention Basin on September 26th to plant wildflower seeds as part of the Third Annual Ladybird Johnson Wildflower Tribute Planting Project.
The plantings were sponsored by the Houston Parks and Recreation Department. Included in the wildflower seed mix were Bluebonnets, Phlox, Indian Blankets, Coreopsis and Black-eyed Susans. Seeds typically are planted in the fall to benefit from the region’s rainiest season before sprouting in mid-March.

The Willow Waterhole Stormwater Detention Basin is part of Project Brays and was constructed by the Harris County Flood Control District. This stormwater detention basin was one of five locations chosen city-wide for the event. The Flood Control District has recently planted thousands of trees at the site and welcomes the wildflower plantings.
