Old Westheimer Stormwater Detention Basin Fact Sheet

Overview
The Old Westheimer Stormwater Detention Basin is one of four stormwater detention basins along Brays Bayou. The basin reduces flood damage for residents and businesses along Brays Bayou by safely storing excess stormwater during heavy rains to reduce peak flows that can cause flooding.

Benefits
Since completion in 2007, the Old Westheimer Detention Basin can store approximately 200 million gallons of stormwater. When not used for flood damage reduction purposes, the basin adds approximately 47 acres of greenspace to the West Houston community. Ultimately, the Harris County Flood Control District (HCFCD) anticipates that the project will create opportunities for recreational partnerships to benefit the surrounding communities.

Location
The Old Westheimer Stormwater Detention Basin is located at Old Westheimer Road and the Westpark Tollway.

Status
Construction on Old Westheimer Stormwater Detention Basin was completed in March 2007. While the excavation is complete, aesthetic features are in the process of being added. Turf establishment has begun, and more than 4,000 trees have been planted in the basin. The final completion date for the basin is early 2009.
